Do you ever wonder when the "mute" button on the telephone is invented? "You mean you want to NOT talk on a phone? Why will anyone want to do that?"
I can name one reason (and a very important one):
When you want to mute the phone and snort in derision during a teleconference.

Ever wonder why there's no "deaf" button on the receiver? But whatever, 98% of the conversation is "dumb"! Why 98%? Because you and I are in the 98th percentile! Hahahaha... B12

Lol. I like the deaf button. How about a "fade" button. And the volume slowly moves to minus infinite?

i always use it cos i just want to listen in to the conference call and do my own stuff. if my name is called, i'll unmute and ask, "can you repeat the question again please?" works like a charm :)
